Trap games come for all of us, and the Cowboys did many dirty on Thursday.
Blame it on the schedule fatigue, or perhaps that their run defense couldn’t stop a rolling shopping cart (ahem, Bucky Irving). The boneheaded turnovers only added more torment.
Sometimes, an undrafted rookie playing on short rest in his first road game for a winless team just isn’t enough of a security blanket in the NFL.
On another note, neither the Giants nor the Commanders could capitalize on the other’s incompetence, so we all lost points on the tie.
Favorites went 9-5-1, marking the fifth straight week they posted a winning record.
Week 6 offers a 14-game slate and 105 points for grabs with the Bengals, Lions, Dolphins and Vikings all on their bye week.
NFL Week 6 Confidence pool rankings
14 points: Bills over Raiders
Talk about the Josh Allen factor: the Bills’ blocked punt in overtime was the saving grace, but they’re not there without Allen’s heroics that produced a marveling 121 rushing yards. Expect him to keep willing his way against a Vegas team coming back down to Earth.
13 points: 49ers over Commanders
If you weren’t sold on the 49ers being in a class of their own before last week, you should be now. They turned four Seattle turnovers into 21 points, and the Commanders are mistake prone.
12 points: Chiefs over Chargers
What is there left to say? You can’t look away from a car wreck nor the Chargers’ despondent post-game press conferences. I’m done with blind optimism. Patrick Mahomes and the rested Chiefs will resume seamlessly.
11 points: Rams over Cardinals
You’re lying if you thought the Rams would have a losing record after five games. Special teams are the scapegoat for the loss in Monday’s classic against the Bills. It won’t be the difference against Arizona’s league-worst defense.
10 points: Colts over Titans
The Colts may have let the Steelers drop 34, but they were still in scoring range all day. They’ll convert on more of those invasions against an incorrigible Titans organization.
9 points: Patriots over Jets
OK, so maybe we all sounded the alarm too soon on the Patriots. The rain aided the Jets’ win over Cleveland more than anything. Aaron Glenn will be further exposed in New England.
8 points: Jaguars over Texans
Jacksonville’s defense has far exceeded expectations; Houston’s has fallen woefully short. That difference makes for another tight Jaguars win.
7 points: Bears over Falcons
It’s the top two rushing offenses to date. Both starting quarterbacks are not confirmed yet for Sunday, so give me the side with more defensive stability.
6 points: Ravens over Browns
Lamar Jackson “has a real chance” to play this week per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Either way, the Ravens proved they could win without him against an Atlanta offense far more threatening than Cleveland’s.

5 points: Seahawks over Broncos
A disjointed offense fueled by regression from Bo Nix makes me bearish on Denver right now. Seattle’s tactical execution isn’t last year’s, though Jaxon Smith-Ngigba offers upside the Broncos can’t match.
Betting on the NFL?
4 points: Steelers over Buccaneers
Time will tell if the Buccaneers’ awakening on the ground was more the Cowboys’ fault than anything. Pittsburgh is overcoming a sluggish start with an effective play-action passing game and rushing attack, and with a solid pass rush, maybe Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy can click again after all.
3 points: Saints over Giants
There’s only so long the Jameis Winston roller coaster can twist and turn on undefeated terms. The Saints have the red zone efficiency (81.3 percent) to cash in on the turnovers.
2 points: Panthers over Eagles
Clock management, play-calling errors and second-half stagnation: the Eagles are falling apart by the seams, and the Panthers are playing with nothing to lose.
1 point: Cowboys over Packers
You could say the only direction for Dallas is up after one of the most pathetic displays in recent memory. Asking for a transformation from this farcical defense within a week’s time is another thing.
LAST WEEK: 8-7, 63/120 points
OVERALL: 45-36, 397/664 points
