The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Suryapet police to submit a report on the alleged custodial death of Karla Rajesh, a Scheduled Caste youth, at Kodad police station in November last year. The directive followed a complaint filed by rights lawyer Immaneni Rama Rao.

Rajesh was allegedly detained in the first week of November in connection with a scam in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. His family claimed he was subjected to third‑degree methods to force a confession. He was remanded to judicial custody on November 10 and died on November 16.

Following intervention by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, a second post‑mortem was conducted in February.

In December, police suspended Kodad Rural circle inspector Pratap Lingam and attached Chilkur sub‑inspector Suresh Reddy to the SP’s office for alleged negligence in ensuring timely medical care. Police maintained Rajesh died of respiratory issues.
