Niall Horan has opened up about his song End Of An Era, admitting he and his co-writers spent four sessions working on the track before re-writing it after Liam Payne’s death

Niall Horan had to “rewrite” one of his songs after the death of Liam Payne. The musician, set to release his upcoming album, Dinner Party, in June, has laid his heart bare for the deeply personal record.

And one track in question, End of An Era, was something Niall had to revisit following the death of his close pal, Liam. Liam died, aged just 31, in October 2024, after falling from the third floor of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Weeks before Liam’s sad death, he spent time with Niall in the same month at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, where Horan was playing a sold-out show. The pair shared snaps from backstage, with Niall recently revealing they also met hours earlier in his hotel.

The two music stars shot to fame in 2010 as one-fifth of One Direction. A manufactured band on The X Factor, put together by Nicole Scherzinger after Horan, Payne, along with Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik were rejected from the show. They went on to become one of the biggest boy bands of their generation, before splitting in 2016.

On his upcoming record, Dinner Party, Niall worked with John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, who also worked with them during their One Direction days. “We wrote ‘End of an Era’ about four times, because originally the song to me meant, ‘All right, we’re moving on’,” he said in a new interview.

He went on to tell Rolling Stone that the song looked toward the future and back on the past with nostalgia, celebrating the memories he had while also being excited for what’s to come. Niall continued: “We’d written that song a long time ago. And then it was like, ‘No, we need to return to this,’ after Liam passed.”

John and Julian had been Liam’s neighbours, with the four lads growing up together on the road. “For the three of us, it was actually quite a crazy experience to have to write a song like that, because you don’t ever expect to,” he explained.

Niall added that it was a “very weird experience” for the trio, but felt as though they “had to” rewrite it, not just for themselves, but for people listening who may have lost a loved one, as well as for the fans and Liam’s loved ones. He said: “It felt like the right thing to do and something that we wanted to do — just terrible that we had to.”

Lyrics on the tear-jerking track include: “We had it, pure magic, remember what it was like, time passes, so fast, and I couldn’t tell you goodbye.”

Since the chart-mauling group disbanded, Niall remained close to Liam, as well as Louis, whom he recently went to see live on tour. And he’s never held back from sharing his pride over his former bandmates and their success. And Niall isn’t afraid to open his heart up on his forthcoming record.

He told Hits Radio about the same track: ” just wanted to delve into the fear of losing someone and loss in this particular song. Yeah, it’s good. I really like this song.”
