Niall Horan has revealed that he was worried he’d forget the lyrics to the One Direction track, Steal My Girl, live on stage in front of 80,000 people over the weekend
Niall Horan feared he’d forget the lyrics to a huge One Direction track – live on stage. Last weekend, the Irish star took to the stage at Wembley Stadium for Capital FM’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard, treating fans to tracks from his solo discography.
However, for the first time since going solo after the band went on an indefinite hiatus back in 2016, Niall opted to perform Steal My Girl. But having performed the track countless times since its 2014 release, it would be wise to assume that Niall, 32, knows the lyrics.
But throughout the song, Niall only sings several lines, while his former bandmates, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and the late Liam Payne also sing. Following his performance last weekend, the End of an Era musician has revealed that there were moments he feared he’d forget the full song.
When asked what it was like to perform the track in full by US chat show host, Jimmy Fallon, Niall replied: “That’s so funny you say that because I was thinking, as I was singing it, literally as I was singing the first verse, I was like, ‘I’ve never sung this verse before’.”
He went on to add: “I would have only ever sung my part, so I don’t think I’ve ever sung those verses before. And here I was in front of 80,000 people going, ‘Oh crap, I better not forget the words here.'”
Luckily for Niall, he managed to remember the lyrics throughout the track. But if he had forgotten the lyrics, Niall admits the sold-out crowd would have helped him out.
“Well, to be honest, even if I did, they probably would have sung it,” he joked. He described the day festival, which takes place annually at Wembley Stadium, as “a big part of my career for the last 15 years’.
Horan added: “Any opportunity I get to play at Jingle Bell Balls or Summertime Balls, it’s always amazing, and there’s not many companies that can pull off a gig of this size with the line-up that we have, so it’s a pleasure to be here.”
With his latest LP, Dinner Party, Niall is on track for his third solo Number One album, following in the footsteps of his 2020 release, Heartbreak Weather and The Show, released in 2023.
Speaking about his career, Niall told the Irish Independent that his solo career has been a “nice, natural progression” with each album, which has seen him grow.
Reflecting on his LP, he said: “I love the album but you’re always tentative to be over excited because you don’t know what people are going to think. You sit with these songs, you spend so much time working on them and it’s up to the fans to grab a hold of them and make it their own.
“You just hope they like the music and feel the need to come and watch it in concert, put their hands in their pocket to come and watch it.” Over the last five years, Niall admits he’s “grown”, and often takes time to look back and reflect on his success and the new era of his life.
