Nick Saban says there’s been a change in college football that he hates to see

With the proposed changes to the College Football Playoff gathering momentum, Nick Saban has highlighted one problem he has with the plan.

No head coach knows as much about winning championships in collegiate football as Nick Saban. The legendary head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide won seven national championships during his career, and also claimed 11 SEC championships to boot.

As the CFP (College Football Playoff) gets closer to a larger bracket, one of the discussed sacrifices to make that happen would be the conference championship games. As someone who experienced so much success in those games, Saban has now given his verdict on the situation.

Nick Saban explains why he doesn’t want the conference championship games to go

An expanded College Football Playoff has been in discussions for a long time. And one of the arguments against the conference championship games is that the extra game has become an unnecessary risk, potentially damaging a team’s playoff chances.

Saban doesn’t agree though, and he made his feelings on the matter quite clear during a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast.

“But what you’re giving up, which is what I hate to see is, you know, the SEC Championship game, playing in the SEC Championship was a big thing to our players. It was a big thing to our fans.
It was a tradition and it was a great venue,” the legendary coach said.

“I mean, there’s only two teams that can play in the National Championship, but more teams can play in those kind of championship games. And, you know, there’s a lot of pride in winning the Conference Championship. And, you know, we played in those games.

“I mean, we’re one, Florida’s two, Florida’s one, we’re two, Georgia’s three, we’re one. I mean, it was a great game and great players love that. And we’re going to give that up to have an extra game where the 24th team is going to play the ninth best team.

“I mean, if we had just put the right 12 teams in and didn’t go through all the political BS that we went through so we could have a 12-team playoff and end up putting a couple teams in, it shouldn’t be in, and then some other teams that should have been in didn’t get in, that was a good tournament.”

Saban makes some valid points here, especially considering that having just one national championship means that a lot of teams will lose out on the experience of the smaller but still meaningful wins. It remains to be seen if his speaking out on the situation will actually change anything.
