He had played a crucial part in his team’s triumphs, including their wins in Copa America in 2021 and 2024. Announcing his retirement, Nicolas took to his Instagram and wrote: 

“Today I find myself writing the hardest words of my entire career. I bid farewell to the Argentina national team, but I am immensely proud to have represented my country. Whilst titles go down in history, the love for these colors lasts a lifetime.”

In his statement, Nicolas did not forget to express his gratitude towards his supporters. According to him, writing this note was the hardest thing he has done in his football journey. He added:

“Thank you, Argentina. Thank you for letting me fulfil my dream of becoming a world champion and of wearing the most beautiful shirt in the world.” 

In addition to his superb international career, Nicolas Otamendi has enjoyed a 16-year tenure in Europe. This included his time in FC Porto, Valencia, Manchester City, and Benfica. While he was abroad, he bagged 21 significant titles, 9 of which came while he was part of Manchester City from 2015 to 2020. 

At present, Nicolas is a player for River Plate in Argentina. For those unaware, he joined the club at the beginning of 2026 after departing from Benfica as a free agent. According to reports, his contract with the team extends until 2027.
