Nicole Kidman’s 17-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose, made her Met Gala debut on Monday as the legendary actress co-chaired the event, but she broke a huge rule

Nicole Kidman’s daughter broke a major rule at her Met Gala debut. Earlier this year, it was announced that Nicole, along with Venus Williams, Beyoncé and Dame Anna Wintour would co-chair the event.

Each year, the biggest celebrities flock to New York for the event, hosted by Condé Nast and organised by Global Chief Content Officer and Artistic Director and former Vogue editor, Dame Anna.

And the guest list is strictly invite-only, with brands allowed to have celebrities representing them, although Dame Anna has the final say and famously stated she would never invite President Trump back. But this year, Nicole’s daughter, Sunday Rose, 17, breached a huge rule imposed on the Met.

It was previously reported that there was a strict age limit for attendance, with Maddie Ziegler, then aged 15, saying she was “not old enough” in 2018. And that was because the event was strictly 18-plus. “It’s not an appropriate event for people under 18,” organisers previously confirmed.

And Sunday Rose wasn’t the only celebrity offspring to flout the rules. Beyonce, who was also joined by husband Jay-Z, invited her 14-year-old Blue Ivy to join her for the first time on the red carpet.

Holding back tears, the singer said on the red carpet, it was ‘surreal’ for Blue to join her. “She looks so beautiful. It’s incredible to be able to share with her; I think she looks so incredible,” said the star.

The Crazy In Love singer – who also has eight-year-old twins Rumi and Sr with her husband – opted for a crystal skeleton gown and a matching silver gown. Blue wore a white Balenciaga gown with a voluminous skirt and a matching unzipped jacket.

For her Met debut, Sunday certainly turned heads in a custom Dior three-dimensional gown, adorned with pink and lavender floral embellishments. The budding model completed her look with matching pink earrings, as her long hair cascaded freely to her hips.

Meanwhile, Nicole opted for a red sequined gown from the French fashion house Chanel. The actress accessorised with Chanel jewellery and an Omega timepiece, with her blonde locks flowing down her back. Posing on the carpet, Sunday looked at ease with her mum.

Speaking to Vogue, Nicole said she wanted to wear something red to “embrace the way in which red has been used in art,” including the “strong symbol of love, passionate love, vitality and motherhood.” While Sunday was described as a “springtime blossoming girl”.

She told the outlet about her outfit: “Mine is really special to me, because I kind of wanted to symbolise something blooming, it’s my first Met,” before Nicole explained she had been “so calm”. However, while it was a big night out for Sunday, she is back in the classroom today at 8am.

It was the third time that Nicole had served as co-chair, with her first being in 2003 for the theme, Goddess: The Classical Mode, before returning two years later for The House of Chanel exhibition.

This year, the Met’s theme was Costume Art, and the dress code was Fashion Is Art. The code asked those in attendance to “illuminate the indivisible connection between clothing and the body,” as well as the “complex interplay between artistic representations of the body and fashion as an embodied art form.”

Speaking to Elle Australia about how Nicole had shaped her, Sunday said: “I definitely gained a lot of interest from those experiences and especially being privileged enough to experience them at a young age. My mum is someone who has always been so creative and my biggest inspiration in life. She’s a key part of everything I do.”

Elsewhere, Nicole told Las Culturistas about her daughter joining her on the carpet: “This is, I think it’s the third time I’ve co-chaired, but to do it now? I’m so, so happy, and my daughter Sunday will be coming. And she loves fashion. She’s actually just walked the Dior show. Yeah, she’s flying back from Paris now.”
