OOTY: Residents at Coonoor and Wellington, near here, sought the intervention of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to find a solution to the poor traffic management as well as haphazard parking in the narrow Ghat roads in Wellington and Coonoor limits, including the Ooty national highway that traverses through Coonoor.

Usha Frankel, a noted social activist in Coonoor, in a letter to the Chief Minister, stated that recently a tragic incident occurred at Boys Company area in Wellington limits, where a woman reportedly lost her life while waiting in an ambulance that was unable to proceed because vehicles parked on either side of the road obstructed its passage.

Precious time was lost while efforts were made to locate the vehicle owners at their respective residences and request them to move their vehicles. The delay had a tragic and irreversible consequence.

Incidents like these are a serious public safety issue that could affect any family in the Nilgiris. No person should lose their life because an ambulance is unable to pass through a road obstructed by improperly parked vehicles. Every minute matters in a medical emergency, and even a short delay can have devastating consequences, she said.

Unregulated parallel parking on both sides of the roads can leave insufficient space for ambulances, fire tenders, rescue vehicles and other emergency services.

“In view of this tragic incident, I earnestly request your immediate intervention and urge the TN government to implement the necessary measures to restrict parking on one or both sides of narrow roads wherever necessary and ensure that roads remain accessible to ambulances, fire engines and rescue vehicles at all times, particularly in congested residential areas and along routes used by emergency services. Direct the Nilgiris district administration, police department, traffic police and local bodies to conduct an immediate survey of narrow and vulnerable roads throughout the Nilgiris and implement a time-bound action plan,” she urged.
