HYDERABAD: Blood clots in blood vessels could lead to life-threatening conditions such as stroke, heart attack and pulmonary embolism, and recognising the warning signs early was essential to prevent complications, doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) said on Tuesday during the World Thrombosis Day observance.

Thrombosis is the formation of blood clots within blood vessels. It can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in which clots form in deep veins, and pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a clot travels to the lungs. Blood clots can also cause strokes and heart attacks.

Doctors identified prolonged immobility, surgery, obesity and smoking as risk factors associated with thrombosis. They advised people not to ignore symptoms such as pain and swelling in the legs, sudden difficulty in breathing or chest pain, and to seek immediate medical attention if these occur.

At an awareness session under the theme ‘Stop the Clot’, Nims director Dr Rahul Devraj said thrombosis could cause life-threatening complications and stressed the need to improve public awareness and identify symptoms at an early stage. The programme highlighted the importance of recognising symptoms, taking preventive measures and seeking timely treatment to reduce the risk of complications.

Dr Devraj also inaugurated a walkathon organised by the department of vascular and endovascular surgery to mark the day. Nims dean Prof. Chandrasekhar, additional medical superintendent Dr Krishna Reddy, vascular surgery associate professor Dr Anusha, assistant professor Dr Arunashree, media relations officer Satya Goud and Allied Sciences College principal Srinivasulu attended the programme. Faculty members, resident doctors, nursing and paramedical staff, physiotherapy students and other employees also participated.
