HYDERABAD: Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) said it had completed 2,000 kidney transplant surgeries which places the institute among the top centres in the country and the highest-ranked institution in south India. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy congratulated the Nims medical team and praised the service provided to patients suffering from kidney ailments.
The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre in Gujarat remains the top-ranked institution in the country for kidney transplants, followed by Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, while Nims now stands in the third position nationally.
Doctors from the Nims’ department of urology completed the 2,000th kidney transplant recently and 1,900 of these surgeries, or nearly 95 per cent, were performed free of cost through the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The institute also recorded 500 kidney transplants in just three years and four months from January 2023, a pace that the government described as a record for the hospital.
Revanth Reddy said the achievement showed the commitment of the doctors and healthcare staff working at NIMS. He congratulated the medical team for reaching the milestone and for continuing treatment support for patients who otherwise may not have been able to afford transplant surgeries.
