Nims Purja’s last voice message surfaces amid disappearance
Nims Purja sent a voice message to NDTV’s Vishnu Som hours before his disappearance, as reported by the news outlet. According to the report, on the morning of July 29, 2026, around 8 AM, Vishnu got a WhatsApp voice message from Nims. For the unversed, Vishnu had contacted the mountaineer regarding an event, and Nims accidentally downloaded the text while checking the weather on his phone, as he allegedly mentioned in his voice message.
In the voice note, Nims Purja mentioned that he was on Camp 2 of the Broad Peak and was running his 58th summit of an 8,000-meter peak. He told Vishnu Som that he would be in touch after the summit was over and was quoted as saying:
“Hey brother, greetings and namaste. Right now, I am on Camp 2 of Broad Peak, which is among 8,000-meter (26,247-foot) mountains. I am now running for my 58th summit of 8,000-meter peaks, which is the highest in the world. I just opened the internet to check the weather forecast. But this message got downloaded as well. I will be in touch after the summit. But if there is anything, please leave the message.”
Nims Purja concluded the voice note, sending his regards to Vishnu Som. He ended the text with ‘Ciao Ciao’, which is an Italian expression meaning ‘bye-bye’. Vishnu replied to Nims, telling him to stay safe. Nims saw the message at 8:15 PM IST on July 29, 2026. He had gone missing less than 14 hours later. The voice note was quoted as:
“Hope you guys are well and it’s great to be connected. Thank you guys and greetings from Camp 2 on Broad Peak. Ciao Ciao.”
What happened to Nims Purja?
For the unversed, Nims Purja and nine other climbers went missing from Camp 2 of the Broad Peak. At 21,161 feet, the point is short of what is known as the ‘death zone’ in international mountaineering. However, that’s where Nims and his expedition were headed. Anything above 8,000 meters means the body cannot acclimatize and the air contains only about a third of the oxygen available at sea level.
At this altitude, cells begin dying faster than they can be replaced. Climbers in the ‘death zone’ are effectively on a countdown. According to reports, Nims was leading the team before they went missing. The group included 5 Nepali climbers, 1 Pakistani, 1 American, 1 Omani, 1 Chinese, and 1 more foreign climber. Reports have alleged that the avalanche struck the group while they were en route between Camp 2 and Camp 3.
For the unversed, given the alleged location, Nims and the group would be at an altitude between 21,600 and 21,850 feet. So far, four bodies have reportedly been located at the avalanche site. However, what has everyone worried is that no alarm call was raised until nearly 13 hours after the incident, believed to have happened at 9 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Reports have also estimated Nims Purja’s last alleged location before he disappeared. According to reports, the climber’s satellite tracking device placed him at 21,847 feet at 9:38 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2026, then saw a rapid fall of approximately 800 meters by 10:18 AM, before going completely blank. After the weather cleared, helicopters joined the search with rescue gear and supplemental oxygen to conduct an aerial search for the six missing climbers.
