Louise Wener and Andy Maclure of the nineties band Sleeper have finally tied the knot after being together for over three decades, telling fans that things can’t be rushed

Two 90s Britpop icons have finally married. Louise Wener and Andy Maclure found love while working together; the latter was the drummer and the former the singer of the band Sleeper.

But during the height of Britpop, the pair got together while recording their hit album, The It Girl, which was released on May 6, 1996. However, more than three decades on, and two children together, the couple have finally said: “I do”.

The news was confirmed on the band’s official Instagram account, where Louise and Andy shared a string of snaps from their big day, along with photos from their personal archive.

In one image, the couple are seen walking out of what appears to be a registry office in Brighton, hand in hand, with Louise wearing a classic white dress; instead, she chose a fitted animal-print outfit, which she completed with a pair of cream ankle boots.

Andy rocked a sharp blazer, shirt, and matching trousers, along with comfortable trainers for the big day. As they left the venue, guests flew confetti into the air before they headed down to Brighton beach to pose for pictures. “30 years. You don’t want to rush into these things,” they captioned the announcement, while RAYE’s Where Is My Husband played over the video.

“Congratulations,” gushed Anita Rani. Writer and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer gushed: “Oh how lovely, congratulations!” “So much joy in this, [champagne emoji] to at least another 30,” commented a third person.

While a fourth went on to type: “Ah such wonderful photos!! Huge congratulations.” “Awwww you guys! Many congratulations,” penned a fifth. Louise and Andy were part of the original Sleeper line-up, with guitarist Jon Stewart and bassist Diid Osman.

Jon and Louise met while studying at Manchester University in 1987 and formed a romantic relationship before starting Sleeper. But while things were initially “awkward”, after Louise and Andy started dating following her split from Jon, they all remain close friends.

She told The Guardian in 2002: “To add to the strangeness, Andy and I had begun a relationship around the time we recorded our second album, The It Girl. At which point all four of us had buried our heads in our hands and wished we’d been wise enough to join a single-sex band.

“It is to everyone’s credit that we muddled through it – Andy and I are still together, and Jon has remained one of our closest friends – but for a while we escaped the pressures and inevitable tensions through drug-taking and wilful excess.”

The group chose the band’s name after the Woody Allen film of the same name, before signing with Indolent Records in 1993. Two years later, they landed their first hit with Inbetweener, with TV icon Dale Winton appearing in the promotional video.

Throughout their career, the band released five studio albums and two compilation records, racking up eight Top 40 hits and three UK top 10 albums, and their music also appeared in the movie Trainspotting.

However, just before the turn of the millennium, the band split in March 1998 after a tour that had to be cancelled, with some dates downsized due to low ticket sales. However, nine years ago, the band reformed to play a string of summer shows across the nation.
