Madurai: Law minister Nirmal Kumar denied any lapse in security arrangements for former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami during his visit to Goripalayam, in Madurai, maintaining that he had been provided the prescribed level of protection without any restrictions.

Responding to reports of an alleged security lapse during Palaniswami’s visit to the Muthuramalinga Thevar statue, the minister told reporters here on Saturday that the former chief minister had been given the same security as others entitled to protection.

“The arrangements remained in force until the evening and there had been no curtailment of his security,” he said.

Asked about former AIADMK minister R.B. Udhayakumar’s demand for the resignation of the electricity minister over power interruptions, Nirmal Kumar said the government was taking steps to address deficiencies in the power sector. New transformers were being procured and additional personnel recruited to strengthen the electricity board.

He said an inquiry would be conducted to identify the causes of power interruptions and corrective measures would be taken wherever shortcomings were found.

Further clarifying the brief power interruption at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple during Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan’s recent visit, Nirmal Kumar said a new generator had been undergoing trial runs since the previous day. The interruption occurred for a few seconds when the power supply was switched over to the generator. Power was subsequently supplied through the generator, he said.

Responding to the media about the Vice-President’s remark that a Tamilian could become Prime Minister, Nirmal Kumar said he was unaware of the context in which the statement was made.
