Notre Dame fans had every reason to celebrate on Saturday night, and the Fighting Irish made sure to add a little extra salt to Miami’s wounds in the process.

After Notre Dame knocked off No. 1 Miami 31-24 at Notre Dame Stadium, fans poured onto the field to celebrate the massive upset. As the crowd stormed the turf, the stadium blasted the Scorpions’ 1984 classic “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” a not-so-subtle jab at the defeated Hurricanes, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
It was a fitting soundtrack for one of the biggest wins of the season in South Bend, and at least one famous fan saw it coming. Actor Jason Sudeikis, the celebrity guest picker on ESPN’s “College GameDay” that morning, guaranteed an Irish upset.
Marcus Freeman’s squad controlled most of the night despite missing several key defenders. Spencer Porath opened the scoring with a 44-yard field goal, and Jordan Faison hauled in a touchdown from quarterback CJ Carr early in the second quarter. Micah Gilbert then capped a two-minute drill with an 18-yard scoring grab before halftime, as the Irish built a 17-3 lead at the break.

Gilbert’s 20-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter pushed the lead to 24-3, but Miami did not go away quietly. Heisman Trophy contender Darian Mensah led a comeback charge, throwing a pair of touchdown passes, including a 12-yard strike to Elija Lofton that capped a 75-yard drive, to cut the deficit to 24-17.
Luke Talich then came up with a key interception of Mensah near midfield, and Nolan James Jr. punched in a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 31-17. Miami added a late score, but Notre Dame held on as time expired to seal the upset.
The win was especially sweet given what happened last season. Miami beat Notre Dame 27-24 in the 2025 season opener, a loss that ultimately cost the Irish in the College Football Playoff picture.

With the victory, Notre Dame improved to 8-1 on the season. The Irish now have nine all-time wins over the AP’s No. 1 team. Miami, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 8-1.
