Joey’s take: Roosters can win it all, but Cowboys for an upset tonight
Rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns analysed the Roosters’ many attacking weapons in this week’s column for the Herald, but he also is tipping the underdogs to prevail in tonight’s game.
Here’s how he sees the contest:
“I think Thursday night’s clash will be an attacking shoot-out, led by two gunslingers in Walker and Scott Drinkwater. Both play without fear of error or consequence and that could easily mean 30 points or more will be needed to win this one.
“The Cowboys are coming off a five-day turnaround but they haven’t left Townsville, while the Roosters have had a day’s worth of travel up north.

The Roosters are outright second on the ladder, overcoming a rocky start to establish themselves as the Panthers’ chief rivals for the 2026 premiership. They’ve reeled off five straight wins, and that’s just their second-best winning streak of the year – another win tonight would match their six-game stretch that lasted until round 10.
But it won’t be easy against a dangerous Cowboys side that has beaten Penrith and premiers Brisbane in the past few weeks, either side of a win over Manly and a loss to the Dolphins.
North Queensland have more run metres than any team in the league this year, while the Roosters lead the NRL in post-contact metres, kick return metres … and errors. Can the Cowboys cash in on another error-prone night from the Tricolours, or will the star-studded Chooks move alongside Penrith at the top of the ladder?
