Vijayawada: The spirit of volunteerism and social responsibility was on full display during the urban local body elections, with 1,100 National Service Scheme volunteers from 15 colleges helping make the polling experience smoother for voters.

By way of community service at polling stations, the young volunteers began their duties as early as 6 am, extending a helping hand to police personnel and ensuring that voters could exercise their franchise without any inconvenience.

From managing queues and regulating the movement of voters to maintaining discipline at polling stations, the volunteers played a laudable role.

Working in close coordination with police personnel, they helped prevent confusion and ensure the orderly movement of voters throughout the polling process.

Their contribution was particularly valuable in assisting elderly people, persons with disabilities and others who needed special support.

The young NSS participants, P. Lakshmi and D. Raghu, stated that the election duty was also an opportunity to translate the ideals of the NSS into action.

District collector Lakshmisha appreciated the role of volunteers on the voting day.

He said the NSS played a significant role in instilling social responsibility and a spirit of service among young people.

He said the participation of 1,100 students from 15 colleges highlighted the potential of youth power in strengthening public institutions and making democratic processes more accessible and people-friendly.

District NSS coordinator Kolleti Ramesh played a key role in coordinating the volunteers during the election duties.
