Bhubaneswar: Speculation surrounding the possible political entry of former IAS officer Sujata Karthikeyan, wife of former bureaucrat-turned-politician VK Pandian, has gathered momentum with a section of senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders openly endorsing her induction into the party.
The discussion has reignited interest in the future leadership dynamics within the BJD, particularly at a time when the regional party is attempting to reposition itself in the Opposition after losing power in Odisha last year.
Senior BJD leader Manmath Routray on Monday said party workers were keen to see Sujata Karthikeyan join the organisation, arguing that her administrative experience and understanding of governance would strengthen the party.
Speaking to reporters, Routray claimed there was little doubt that Sujata would eventually enter active politics through the BJD and asserted that the party was prepared to welcome her warmly.
“Sujata is joining the BJD; there is no doubt about it. We would be extremely happy if she joins at the earliest. She will neither hold any organisational post nor be projected as anyone’s successor. She will work as an ordinary party worker for Odisha’s development. Her knowledge and experience will pose a strong challenge to the government,” Routray said.
He further suggested that BJD president Naveen Patnaik was favourably inclined towards her entry. According to Routray, sustained criticism from sections of the media and political opponents may have delayed her decision to enter public life.
“While her entry may not please everyone, it is likely to boost the morale of a large section of party workers,” he added.
Another senior leader, Prasanta Kumar Muduli, also backed the idea, saying Sujata’s inclusion would strengthen the party’s organisational structure and provide valuable guidance at a crucial juncture.
Muduli, however, noted that BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has so far maintained silence on the issue.
“We will continue to raise issues concerning law and order and the problems faced by common people. Our focus will remain on addressing public grievances and ensuring that people’s concerns are heard and resolved,” he said.
The growing chorus within the BJD in favour of Sujata’s entry is politically significant because it comes amid continued debate over the legacy and influence of VK Pandian, who emerged as one of the most powerful figures in the previous BJD government before stepping away from active politics following the party’s electoral defeat.
Political observers believe that if Sujata Karthikeyan decides to enter the BJD, it could signal an attempt by the party to tap into experienced administrative talent while also energising sections of its cadre. At the same time, such a move may revive discussions over the role of former bureaucrats in the party’s future trajectory.
Despite the increasing buzz, Sujata Karthikeyan has neither confirmed nor denied the reports. Efforts to obtain her response on the matter were unsuccessful.
