Bhubaneswar: In a chilling and bizarre incident from Odisha’s Boudh district, a paralysed man was left trapped and helpless inside his own room for nearly two hours after a snake slithered in and coiled itself around his hand, virtually holding him hostage.

The incident occurred in a remote village where the middle-aged man, bedridden due to paralysis, was resting alone inside his house. Unable to move freely because of his medical condition, he suddenly noticed a snake entering the room through a small opening.

Before he could react, the reptile climbed onto the chair beside his bed and wrapped itself around one of his hands. With the snake tightly coiled and hissing intermittently, the terrified man remained frozen in fear, afraid that even the slightest movement could provoke a deadly strike.

For nearly two hours, the helpless patient sat motionless, battling panic and pain, while the snake maintained its grip. His condition made escape impossible.

Family members and neighbours, alerted by his cries for help, gathered outside the room but were too frightened to intervene directly. The unusual scene triggered panic in the neighbourhood, with many villagers watching from a distance as the paralysed man remained trapped with the reptile.

Finally, local snake rescuers were contacted. After a tense operation, the snake was carefully removed without harming either the man or the reptile. Only then did the exhausted victim breathe a sigh of relief.

Villagers described the incident as nothing short of a nightmare. Many said they had never witnessed such a frightening encounter where a snake appeared to “capture” a human being inside his own home.

“Fortunately, the paralysed man escaped unharmed, but the terrifying memory of those two hours is likely to haunt him — and our entire village — for a long time. The incident reflects the increasing human-snake encounters reported from rural Odisha during the summer and monsoon months, when reptiles often enter homes in search of shelter and cooler surroundings,” said Kambhu Dhar Kheti, a local journalist.
