A man who went to a free part concert was left left totally gobsmacked when he quickly realised who the ‘old guy’ was who got up on the stage for an impromptu performance

Everyone loves heading out to watch their favourite acts perform live, but with ticket prices continuing to soar, many music fans are increasingly turning to free or budget-friendly gigs. However, one lucky music enthusiast got far more than he anticipated when he rocked up to a free concert at his local park and found himself in the presence of a true rock legend.

A man named Edd took to his X account to share his remarkable story, along with a photo of the star, revealing exactly what had unfolded. He wrote: “Went to a free concert at the park yesterday. Some old guy randomly gets on stage to perform. Guy had great vocals and I really enjoyed his music.”

Accompanying the post were two pictures of English singer Robert Plant, best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of iconic rock band Led Zeppelin.

The post immediately went viral, racking up more than 2.6 million likes.

One person replied: “He’s a golden God,” as Edd exclaimed: “Absolutely!”

While another added: “NO WAY! ,” as the original poster chimed in: “Way!”

A third wrote: “He’s the best, saw them earlier this year in Dallas.”

One stunned user couldn’t believe ‘the number of people who do not know who it is’, to which Edd responded: “Guys a legend of rock!”

Numerous followers were keen to know where the surprise performance had taken place, with Edd revealing it was at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, US, as part of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – a hugely popular, entirely free, non-commercial music festival held in the park every year.

Edd revealed that Plant, 78, had a scheduled performance the following day , but his impromptu gig came as a surprise to everyone who was attending on the day. The X user also noted Plant’s voice was still ‘sounding great’.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in rock history, Plant epitomised the archetypal 1970s rock frontman with his formidable, multi-octave vocal range, soaring high-pitched belts, and theatrical stage presence.

He joined Led Zeppelin in 1968 after being discovered by guitarist Jimmy Page. Alongside Page, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham, Plant helped catapult the band to worldwide stardom.

He wrote the lyrics to numerous of the band’s most iconic anthems, including “Stairway to Heaven, “Kashmir,” and “Whole Lotta Love,” frequently drawing inspiration from Norse mythology and the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 following the tragic death of John Bonham. After the band’s break-up, Plant refused to coast on past glories and embarked on a remarkably adventurous solo career. His musical exploration stretched well beyond hard rock, encompassing blues, folk, country, and world music.

He has released 11 solo studio albums, ranging from Pictures at Eleven (1982) through to Carry Fire (2017). In 2007, he teamed up with bluegrass legend Alison Krauss for the hugely praised album Raising Sand, which dominated the 2009 Grammy Awards, scooping Album of the Year.

The duo came together again in 2021 to put out a second joint album, Raise the Roof.
