One person has died following a suspected knife attack at a bank in the Bavarian city of Regensburg.
According to the police, the attack happened on Thursday at 2.50pm.
The victim received medical treatment outside the bank and was rushed to hospital, but later died.
German newspaper Bild reported that the victim was an employee at the bank.
As of late Thursday afternoon, police said they believed other people remained inside the building with the suspect, although it was still unclear whether the incident was a hostage situation.
The suspected male perpetrator is believed to be armed with a knife. “We are currently assuming this is the work of a lone perpetrator,” a spokeswoman said.
Police on social media said that a major operation was underway.
“We have a large number of officers on the scene on Stromerstraße in Regensburg,” police said on social media. “Please avoid the area and keep the access routes clear.”
Authorities have not released any information about a possible motive, and the situation remains ongoing.
