WARANGAL: The Kakatiya Heritage Trust has expressed concern over a proposed open-cast mining project by Singareni, alleging that it could pose a threat to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ramappa Temple and Ramappa Lake.
Trust members, retired professor Panduranga Rao and former mayor Dr T. Rajeshwar Rao, met Union coal and mines minister G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday night and submitted a report seeking intervention.
The trust said the proposed PVNR open-cast mine at Venkatapur, about 5 km from Ramappa, would involve excavation to a depth of 300 metres. It claimed the area had a complex geological structure with faults, fractures and joints, and large-scale mining could potentially affect the temple and lake.
The trust also warned that 12 villages within the proposed mining area could face risks. As land acquisition had already begun, it urged the Centre to intervene immediately and halt the process.
The trust members said Kishan Reddy assured them that he would make efforts and advised them to pursue the matter with the state government as well.
