More than 1,000 mechanised and country boats in Thoothukudi district remained berthed for the third consecutive day on Thursday following a fisheries department advisory against venturing into the sea amid strong
winds. The advisory followed an alert from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) that winds of 40 to 60 kmph were likely over the Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, Kanyakumari and north Tamil Nadu coastal areas following the formation of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen from coastal villages between Vembar and Periyathalai in the district stayed ashore in response to the warning for three consecutive days on September 22, 23 and 24. At the Thoothukudi fishing harbour alone, around 275 mechanised boats remained berthed on Thursday.
