Visakhapatnam: Authorities on Thursday destroyed 20,876 kg of ganja and 23 kg of hashish oil seized in 490 cases across five districts under the Visakhapatnam Range. The contraband was destroyed at the Coastal Waste Management Plant in Parawada, Anakapalli district.

Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha, Visakhapatnam Range IG Gopinath Jatti, Anakapalli SP Tuhin Sinha and other senior police officials attended the destruction programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Anitha said the NDA government had adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics and launched an aggressive campaign against ganja cultivation and drug trafficking.

Under the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the government established the EAGLE system to strengthen surveillance and enforcement against narcotics, she said.

Anitha said ganja cultivation in Alluri Sitarama Raju district had been effectively curbed and noted that this was the fifth large-scale destruction of seized ganja in the last 18 months.

She said a substantial quantity of ganja was trafficked from Odisha to other states and added that Odisha police had adopted several recommendations of the state’s EAGLE team.

The minister said the government had expanded CCTV coverage and checkpoints, while awareness campaigns such as the 53-day Abhyudaya Cycle Yatra and anti-drug programmes under Chaitanyam and Sankalpam had helped spread awareness.

Advanced technology was also being used to track and arrest members of national and international drug trafficking networks, she added.
