Demonstrating that talent knows no barriers, more than 40 children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities took centre stage at an ‘Inclusive Talent Showcase’ organised by the Abhishta Charitable Trust at the International Trade Fair at Janata Maidan here.
The participants enthralled the audience with an array of performances, including dance, music, playing musical instruments, yoga and drawing. Children from various schools and organisations working in the field of disability awareness also took part in the programme, showcasing their creativity, confidence and abilities.
The performances drew widespread appreciation from the audience, turning the event into a celebration of inclusion and the immense potential of children who are often marginalised because of their disabilities.
The programme also brought the focus to the need to create a more inclusive social environment for persons with intellectual disabilities, autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Speakers and organisers stressed that persons with disabilities have an equal claim to opportunities, dignity and participation in society.
They emphasised the importance of making schools and colleges more inclusive by providing appropriate vocational education, skill development and opportunities for meaningful employment. A supportive workplace environment, they said, was equally important to enable persons with disabilities to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.
The event also highlighted the emotional and practical challenges confronting parents and caregivers, who often shoulder enormous responsibilities while caring for children with special needs. Ensuring their long-term care, protection and security, particularly after their parents are no longer around, remains a major concern.
The need for greater public awareness and informed discussion on legal provisions, guardianship and long-term care arrangements for persons with intellectual disabilities was also underscored.
Among those present were Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, former MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, AIIMS Bhubaneswar head of psychiatry Dr Biswa Ranjan Mishra and Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights member Chandana Das.
Chartered accountant Mihir Sahu, filmmaker Biyat Prajna Tripathy, social worker Rozalin Pattashani Mishra, author Dr S. Ravi Kumar, Wonder World Water Park director Rashmita Prusti and Abhishta Charitable Trust founder-chairperson Eli Padhi also attended the programme.
