Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs defended appearing to celebrate his first of two touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers by mimicking being in handcuffs.

Jacobs missed the first six games of the season having been placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. That followed a May incident with his former girlfriend that saw him face misdemeanour charges of battery and criminal damage. Jacobs pleaded no contest on September 10 before subsequently being convicted of the battery charge by a judge and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

The 28-year-old was removed from the exempt list on October 19, enabling him to return to the field as the NFL considers further disciplinary action, with a suspension still possible.

Jacobs made his season debut last week, scoring a receiving touchdown as the Packers lost 20-17 to the Detroit Lions.

His rushing stats were disappointing on Thursday against the Panthers as he carried the ball 21 times for just 39 yards. However, Jacobs still proved instrumental to a 27-19 victory that saw the Packers improve to 5-3.

Jacobs put the Packers up 13-10 in the second quarter with a one-yard rushing score, before giving Green Bay a 27-10 lead in the third quarter on a four-yard touchdown reception.

He caused a stir after his first score, though, as he walked in the endzone with his hands behind his back in a position that seemed to imitate being in handcuffs.

Jacobs, though, insisted the celebration was not a reference to his legal issues.

“They didn’t get the whole celebration, s*** it was f****** one second that they just showed me,” Jacobs told reporters.

“Anyways, me and Savion [Williams] came up with a celebration, if they would’ve shown the whole celebration.

“Basically, last week, we said the first celebration when I score, I was gonna thank God, that’s what I did last week.

“Second was going to be ‘Break Every Chain.’ It’s a gospel song, that was going to be the next celebration. It’s just a correlation, but as I said, the media gonna run with it; they’re going to make it something that it wasn’t, but it is what it is.”
