Pahlaj Nihalani Former CBFC Head Passes Away at 76

Former head of the Censor Board of Film Certification and producer Pahlaj Nihalani has passed away. A prominent figure in the Indian film industry, Nihalani breathed his last on June 4, at the age of 76. 

His family confirmed the news through an official statement that read, “With profound grief, we inform you of the passing of our beloved Pahlaj Nihalani on 4th June 2026. The cremation ceremony will be held today, 04.06.2026 at 3 pm at Santacruz Hindu Crematorium. We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers as we bid a final farewell.”

 As per reports, he had been facing health complications for the past couple of months,  including liver cirrhosis. Although he was transferred between various hospitals for treatment, his condition deteriorated, leading to his eventual death. 

Pahlaj Nihalani was a film producer as well as the chairman of CBFC before he was replaced by Prasoon Joshi. He was also the president of the Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers for 29 years.

As a producer, he has backed films such as Haathkhadi (1982), Aandhi-Toofan (1985), Ilzaam (1986) and Aag Hi Aag (1987), among others. 

He is survived by his wife Nita Nihalani and three sons Vishal, Deepesh and Chirag Nihalani.
