Chennai: As the campaign for the by-elections to the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies pick up momentum at the grassroots level, the top brass of the major political parties, all keen on clinching the two seats, have decided to take the plunge himself with Chief Minister and TVK president C Joseph Vijay planning to be in the constituencies for two days each.
Normally, campaigning for two days by the top leaders in an Assembly constituency is rare, unless the result of the election holds significance for the parties. But it is learnt that Vijay would be in Madurantakam and Dharapuram for two days each – one day dedicated to serious campaigning by reaching out to the voters and the other day to organize a roadshow.
Vijay is keen on wresting the seats because the TVK candidate had won the same seats – Maragatham Kumaravel in Madurantakam and Sathyabhama in Dharapuram – in the general election as AIADMK candidates. Since they decided to defect to the TVK, they resigned the seats.
With the AIADMK seeing the seats as theirs, they want to ensure the victory of their present candidates – Kanitha Sampath from Maduranthakam and K Bhanumathi from Dharapuram – and hence party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is also planning for a two day campaign in each of the constituencies that he believes is his party pocket boroughs.
The other parties in the race, the DMK, the two Communists parties – each contesting in one – and the Naam Tamizhar Katchi of Seeman have also now decided to have intensive campaigns by their top leaders.
So DMK’s M K Stalin, the CPI and CPM State leaders and Seeman are expected to spend more time in the two constituencies canvassing votes for their respective candidates, turning the campaign into a dog fight.
