THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Several prominent CPM leaders who quit the party just before the assembly elections are now ahead in their constituencies. In Ambalapuzha, G Sudhakaran leads his closest CPM rival, H Salam, after the fourth round with 20,776 votes to Salam’s 14,758.

The CPM stronghold of Kannur is seeing a major setback as V Kunnikrishnan, expelled for alleging corruption against sitting MLA T I Madhusoodhanan, is ahead by 5,459 votes in Payyanur, while Madhusoodhanan, who previously won by over 50,000 votes, is trailing. In Taliparamba, P K Shyala Teacher, wife of CPM state secretary M V Govindan, is behind by more than 7,206 votes, with Marxist veteran and former party member T K Govindan Master in the lead. All these former CPM leaders have the backing of the Congress-led UDF.
