Hill looked back on the moment while explaining what makes Mahomes such a strong leader. The receiver remembered a stretch when the Chiefs were struggling, and several of its biggest offensive names were not playing well. Hill, Travis Kelce, Demarcus Robinson, and Sammy Watkins were all part of that group.
According to Hill, Mahomes called the entire offense together on a Tuesday and made sure nobody walked away feeling comfortable.
“Pat a different dude, and I’m going to tell you how he’s a different dude. I can’t remember what year it was, but we was on a bad streak. All his supporting cast was playing bad. Me, Kelce, D-Rob, Sammy, we all was playing bad. This dude called the whole offense up. He called the whole offense up. This was like on a Tuesday, I believe. He called us all up. He cussed all of us the out.
Me and Pat, we go back and forth, but that was a moment right there where he stood on business. And it was like, bro, I really respect this because he really just called out all his weapons individually.
Pointed us out, looked us in the eyes and said, ‘Bro, Reek, you think you so fucking fast, but you can’t catch the damn ball…”
That was not a normal quarterback-to-teammate conversation. Hill said Mahomes went around the room and addressed each player individually. The wide receiver then remembered exactly how personal the conversation became. Mahomes looked him in the eyes and challenged him over something as basic as catching the football.

For Hill, the message worked because it came from someone who was part of the same group. Mahomes was not standing outside the offense, throwing criticism around. Hill said the players had close relationships with their quarterback away from football, too.
That made the confrontation hit harder. Hill also made clear that he did not exactly enjoy getting called out at the moment.
Years after their Chiefs partnership ended, Hill is still talking about that meeting as an example of Mahomes taking control of the offense. The former teammates remain close, and Hill’s story gives a pretty direct look at the kind of accountability he believes Mahomes brought into the Chiefs’ locker room.
