Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a big hit from Jets first-round pick David Bailey on a sack late in the first half and lost the ball for the second Chiefs turnover of the day.
Of greater concern to the Chiefs may be that Mahomes went to the sideline for medical attention after the turnover. Mahomes was checked out by medical personnel and then began throwing the football to test his arm. Mahomes could be seen grimacing after the throws, but he returned to the field after Jets kicker Jason Sanders missed a 53-yard field goal with 37 seconds to play in the half.

Mahomes completed a pass to Travis Kelce for 12 yards and then avoided Bailey on another rush before scrambling for 7 yards. That set up a Harrison Butker 56-yard field goal that went wide right, but the Jets were offside and Butker got another chance. He missed from 51 yards away as well, however, and the Chiefs lead 14-12 at the break.
Head coach Andy Reid told CBS that Mahomes hurt his elbow a little bit. Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes to running back Kenneth Walker to account for the Chiefs’ scoring and finished the half 11-of-15 for 120 yards.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith was 10-of-17 for 81 yards and the Jets never punted in the first half, but Sanders’ five field goal attempts were all they were able to generate on the scoring front. Running back Braelon Allen lost a fumble to set up one of the Kansas City touchdowns and the Jets weren’t able to fully capitalize on a Justin Fields fumble on a quarterback sneak early in the game.
Those missed opportunities will loom even larger if the Chiefs are able to extend their lead after taking the ball to open the second half.
