The expectation throughout the offseason has been that the New England Patriots will agree on a trade for Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown on or after June 1.
But it’s important to understand that there has never been a guarantee. Brown isn’t a Patriot until the deal is signed and sealed.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport continues to believe that New England is the most likely destination for Brown, but he also pointed out the fact that the two sides have yet to agree to a deal. The Eagles are currently seeking a 2027 first-round draft pick for the three-time All-Pro wide receiver, according to Rapoport.
However, the Patriots have been unwilling to give up that high of compensation as of right now.
“I just don’t know that it’s going to be like snap your fingers and then a deal is done because the two sides are where they have been, which is the Eagles wanting a first-round pick in 2027,” Rapoport said on The Insiders. “The Patriots, the most likely destination—we’ll see if someone else arises. The Patriots are the most likely destination, not being willing to give up a first-round pick as of right now. That means they’re not particularly close, and yeah, there’s a chance this could drag on for the foreseeable future.”
The 2027 NFL Draft is believed to be one of the best classes in recent memory. So it would make sense why the Patriots would be hesitant to give up a top pick.

They’d love to sign Brown to their roster, but they’ve made enough moves to eliminate any form of desperation to get him. The team signed Romeo Doubs in free agency to add to a receiving corps of Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas and Efton Chism III.
Stefon Diggs is also still on the free agent market if the Patriots wanted to explore a reunion with their leading receiver from 2025. The current situation simply comes down to a staring contest between the Patriots and Eagles.
