Guwahati: Congress leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday appeared before the crime branch of the Assam police for questioning in connection with cases filed by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, after he accused her of possessing multiple passports and undisclosed properties and assets abroad.
Informing that he was here to cooperate with police in the investigation, Mr Khera told reporters, “I have been summoned by the police and have come accordingly. We respect the law and the judiciary, so I am here as per legal procedure.”
Mr Khera said he would speak to the press in detail after the questioning was completed.
Assam chief minister’s wife had filed criminal complaints against Mr Khera and others at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The charges against the Congress leader include making false statements in connection with an election, cheating, forgery, use of forged documents as genuine, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and defamation.
It is significant that the Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to Mr Khera, observing that the matter appeared to have arisen out of political rivalry.
Mr Sarma while reacting to Mr Khra’s appearance before police said that the government of India has already carried out investigation into the charges and found these allegations false and baseless. “I don’t think the police will take much time in filing the charge-sheet as the government of India has already started sending information procured from respective countries,” he said.
