Following that, Payal transitioned into core political and national affairs journalism.
Her career in journalism spanned more than a decade, and she served as an Assistant Editor at CNN-News18. She worked across television news as well as wire services. Throughout her career, Payal Mehta worked with Focus TV, NewsX, Republic TV, and Asian News International (ANI). She reportedly joined CNN back in 2018, and following that, in 2022, she went on to work with ANI. If the reports are to be believed, in 2023, she rejoined CNN as an Assistant Editor.
PM Narendra Modi offered condolences to Payal Mehta’s grieving family

The PM praised Payal for bringing a deep understanding of national issues to her reporting, while calling her a ‘hard-working’ individual. He also added that Payal Mehta will be remembered for her kindness and warmth. Offering condolences to Payal’s grieving family, PM Narendra Modi wrote:
“Payal Mehta Ji was a hardworking journalist who remained firmly connected to the ground, bringing a deep understanding of national issues to her reporting. Beyond her work, she will be remembered for the kindness and warmth with which she touched so many lives. Her sudden and untimely passing is extremely saddening. My condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. May they find strength in this difficult hour. Om Shanti.”
Along with the PM, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also offered condolences to Payal’s grieving family. He also praised Payal’s professionalism and revealed that the journalist was extremely committed to her profession and would be present from morning to night during the parliament sessions and proceedings.
Kangana Ranaut took to her social media handle and shared that she was left in shock with the report about Payal Mehta’s passing. She also lauded the senior journalist for her dedication to her profession. Kangana’s note could be read as:

What happened to senior journalist, Payal Mehta?
The official reason for Payal Mehta’s death has not been disclosed as of now. It was revealed by another journalist, Sheela Bhatt, on X that it was on September 20, 2026, around 2.00 a.m., when Payal felt uneasy. Reportedly, following this, she was rushed to a hospital in Mumbai.
If the report is to be believed, Payal’s pulse suddenly dropped even before her treatment began. No further details about her physical condition have been released officially. Some social media users have been wondering if the pulse drop was caused by certain issues or cardiac arrest; however, nothing has been confirmed as of now.
Speaking of her previous medical reports, another piece of information has been shared, which claims that the journalist suffered a minor stroke, around 18 months ago. No further details about the same are available as of now, or about whether the previous medical issue contributed to her sudden uneasiness, following which she passed away.
