Arguably no top performer for Boston, however, has come on more suddenly than left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle. The 23-year-old struggled in his seven games in 2025, but has been terrific throughout his second MLB season.
During the Red Sox‘s postseason clinch celebrations on Sunday, Tolle acknowledged his breakout campaign with a hilarious quote.

In the midst of Boston’s locker-room celebrations on Sunday after clinching a postseason berth, Tolle answered questions from reporters.

The young starter said he believes the Red Sox can “make a run” in October. He also acknowledged that his 2025 contributions to Boston’s playoff roster paled in comparison to 2026.
“Last year, it kind of felt like I got an ‘A’ on the group project and didn’t do anything,” Tolle said. “I’m super proud to be a part of this group, just excited to keep going.”
Tolle, through 25 starts this season, has a 9-6 record with a 3.02 ERA and 166 strikeouts. He’s become one of the most reliable arms in Boston’s rotation — something that will certainly continue into the postseason.
