The PGA Tour will look very different in just a short time. Come 2028, the Tour plans a complete schedule overhaul. Some details on the Tour’s future plans have leaked over the past few months.
The biggest change we know about is that the Tour will be split into two tiers, the Championship Series and the Challenger Series, with the best players teeing it up on the Championship Series.
Before Monday, we knew roughly how many events would be included in each series, but beyond the majors and the playoff events, we didn’t know which tournaments would earn the top-tier nod, and which would be relegated to the second tier.
Now we know at least one of the events that will be part of the exclusive Championship Series: the Travelers Championship.
Travelers Championship first to join PGA Tour’s Championship Series
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced the dramatic schedule changes earlier this year, but he did so without many specifics.
What we do know is that the best 120 or so players will be featured in the Championship Series, which will have 23-24 events. That includes the four majors, FedEx Cup Playoff events and the Players Championship.
Since then, many have wondered which tournaments would be included in the Championship Series, which will feature huge purses. Some tournaments face being part of the Challenger Series, where players outside the top 120 will battle to be promoted to the Championship Series the following year.
Still more PGA Tour tournaments were feared to be left out altogether.
On Monday, we got our first official news when the Tour and the Travelers Championship jointly announced that the Travelers will be part of the Championship Series in 2028.
The fact that the Travelers will be included in the Tour’s top tier is not a surprise. The annual event, which is played at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, is one of the most popular and well-attended events on the PGA Tour.
Rolapp acknowledged as much during his press conference at the 2026 Travelers earlier this season.
“This has been an extremely successful tournament by every metric. Our members love it. Travelers is an amazing partner. We obviously have an affinity for this course,” Rolapp said at the Travelers. “They do a wonderful job. I think they do a lot of things that we’re looking for in a Championship Series event.”
The Travelers Championship has been a Signature Event in recent years, and it will be again in June of 2027, before officially joining the Championship Series in 2028.
