Filmmaker Karan Johar made his Met Gala debut in a custom look by Manish Malhotra. Titled Framed in Eternity, the outfit was inspired by the work of the renowned Indian painter, Raja Ravi Varma. The look was built on a structured black base. He wore a high-neck, fitted jacket with strong, power shoulders, creating a sharp and defined silhouette.

Layered over this was a six-foot hand-painted cape. The surface featured detailed scenes drawn from Raja Ravi Varma’s visual language, with figures, draped textiles, and classical compositions spread across the fabric.

The cape was finished with vintage zardozi embroidery. The inner layers were kept dark, allowing the artwork to remain the focus. The ensemble was created in over 85 days by more than 80 artisans, with the artwork entirely painted by hand.

Sharing the photos on social media, he wrote, “Framed In Eternity
Inspired by the art of Raja Ravi Varma.

Raja Ravi Varma felt right because his work does something I’ve always tried to do in cinema. He painted feelings. And who better than my oldest partner in crime & fashion to help me bring this to life other than Manish Malhotra. To bring our Indian culture to the global stage with the vision of couture and gratitude woven together, is an art form in itself which he has mastered. You made me feel like a canvas for your art, thank you!”
