ALS is a progressive, fatal neurological disease that destroys motor neurons, which are the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. It leads to the cells dying, meaning the brain can no longer communicate with the muscles. This leads to severe weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure.
