Pinarayi Vijayan’s historic two terms as Kerala Chief Minister have come to an end as the southern state embraces the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

In the state assembly election results declared on Monday, May 4, the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), is facing an overwhelming defeat.

This marks the end of two successive terms of Left rule in the state. With this defeat, no Left party will be ruling any state in India for the first time since the 1977–79 period.

Resurgence of the Congress

The 2026 assembly election has brought the Congress party back to power, with its coalition, the UDF, leading in over 100 seats in the 140-member assembly. The UDF had won just 41 seats in the 2021 election and has significantly improved its tally.

Many of its candidates have defeated incumbent ministers, making the victory even more satisfying for party cadres and supporters.

In a state that typically alternates between the LDF and the UDF, the UDF had failed to win the 2021 election against an incumbent LDF government.

BJP wins two seats

For the first time in Kerala’s history, the BJP has won two seats in the assembly elections. The party’s B. B. Gopakumar won in the Chathamangalam constituency in Kollam district, while state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar won the Nemom constituency in Thiruvananthapuram.

The party had not won a single seat in the 2021 state assembly elections.
