The Petbasheerabad probing the Bandi Sai Bageerath’s Pocso Act case on Sunday booked fresh criminal cases against 24 media managements for broadcasting and printing the photographs, videos and personal details of the minor victim and her family members and circulating them on social media platforms. They have been booked under the relevant sections of the Pocso Act which prohibit the circulation of details of minor victims.
In response on a complaint filed by the chairperson of the child welfare committee, Medchal-Malkajgiri district, the Petbasheerabad police registered the cases under Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, Section 72(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 23 of the Pocso Act.
Cases have been booked against social media users who shared and circulated the 17-year-old victim’s photographs, videos and personal details, along with those of her parents, police confirmed.
“We identified Instagram and Facebook account IDs, along with relevant URLs used to circulate the material, our IT and cyber teams are making efforts to trace the handlers,” a police officer said.
A senior police officer warned that stern action will be taken against anybody found sharing or amplifying such sensitive content on social media or even circulating the restricted pictures, videos or even the name of the victim and her family members.
Meanwhile, the Charminar police on Sunday registered cases after the Telangana High Court Registrar complained about viral posts and reports alleging that favours had been offered by Union minister of state Bandi Sanjay to the a member of the judiciary in exchange for anticipatory bail for his son. The posts further alleged prior attempts to influence police, mainstream media and social platforms.
The registrar said the circulated material was widely read by judges, advocates and the public and had the potential to damage the reputation of the judiciary. On that basis the Charminar police registered cases under the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The High Court registrar emphasised that false or malicious narratives targeting judges undermine public faith in the judiciary and must be dealt with under law.
Police confirmed they have begun a probe and are examining the posts and their sources. Officials said the investigation will determine the authorship and motive behind the messages tarnishing the image of the judiciary.
