The sacrifices of police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty to protect law and order were recalled by officials during Police Commemoration Day programmes in Nizamabad and Kamareddy on Wednesday.

Nizamabad district collector Ila Tripathi and police commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya said the sacrifices of police personnel were invaluable and society would always remain indebted to them.

They were speaking at a programme organised by the district police at the police headquarters in Nizamabad. Collector Ila Tripathi, the chief guest, joined the police commissioner in paying floral tributes at the martyrs’ memorial. The gathering observed a two-minute silence in honour of the fallen personnel.

The collector said police personnel worked round the clock to maintain law and order, often risking their lives while facing numerous challenges. She recalled the death of CCS constable Pramod Kumar, who was killed by anti-social elements in Nizamabad last year. She also recalled the courage displayed by constable Tukaram while confronting terrorists during the Mumbai attacks.

Police commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya said 154 police personnel had laid down their lives across the country this year. Within the Nizamabad Police Commissionerate limits, 21 personnel had died while fighting anti-social elements and Naxalites since 1986.

He assured the families of the deceased personnel that the police department would support them. House sites had been allotted to 11 families, while efforts were under way, in coordination with revenue officials, to allot sites to the remaining 10 families at their preferred locations, including Kamareddy, Makloor and Hyderabad.

Mementoes were presented to family members of police personnel who had died in the line of duty. Additional DCP (Administration) Shubham Prakash, ACPs, Special Branch officials, other police officers, Police Association president Srinivas and family members of the martyrs attended the programme.

In Kamareddy, district collector Ashish Sangwan and superintendent of police M. Rajesh Chandra paid floral tributes to police martyrs at the memorial on the district police office premises.

The collector and the SP, along with police officers, personnel and family members of the martyrs, paid tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives to protect the nation, maintain internal security and safeguard law and order.

Collector Ashish Sangwan said the values and dedication of police martyrs should serve as an example to everyone. Maintaining law and order was essential for social development and the delivery of welfare benefits, he said. He added that soldiers guarding the country’s borders and police personnel protecting internal security made significant sacrifices for public safety.

Additional SP (Administration) K. Narasimha Reddy, DSPs S. Madhusudan, P. Vittal Reddy and S. Srinivasa Rao, officers from various police stations, reserve inspectors, sub-inspectors, other personnel and family members of the martyrs attended the programme.

As part of Police Flag Day and to commemorate the sacrifices of police martyrs, the Telangana state police department is organising online essay-writing, short-film and photography competitions for students, police personnel and the public, SP M. Rajesh Chandra said.
