A group of men allegedly yelled offensive comments before one stopped to perform a Nazi salute on a popular street in Sydney’s Inner West.
Police have released images of four men walking along Australia Street in Newtown on Saturday at about 5.40pm who police say “can assist” their investigation into the incident.
A woman also allegedly had offensive comments directed at her as the group walked down the street, on which Newtown Police Station is located. The alleged Nazi salute is not pictured in the images released.
There is no suggestion any of the men pictured performed the Nazi salute; nor that they have engaged in any wrongdoing, just that police believe they can assist the investigation.
Knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public, for instance by performing the salute, has a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment, but the penalty can rise to two years if it occurs near a Jewish synagogue, school or museum.
