A 5,000‑strong city police force raided 558 pan shops near educational institutions during a special drive titled ‘Operation Safe School’, led by police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar. The drive aimed to ensure that the surroundings of schools and colleges remained addiction‑free.

Sajjanar said police had conducted a decoy operation following complaints from parents and found evidence that shopkeepers were selling tobacco products to children. He announced the appointment of a special officer within the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H‑NEW) to maintain continuous surveillance at the field level.

The commissioner said the operation involved the Task Force, H‑NEW, reserve police and law and order units. He personally inspected shops near educational institutions in Chirag Ali Lane, Red Hills, Mehdipatnam, Mallepally and Goshamahal. He directed officials to register cases against shop owners selling cigarettes and tobacco products in violation of regulations around campuses.

Speaking to the media at MJ Bridge in Goshamahal, Sajjanar warned of a “mailed fist” policy against those selling tobacco products to minors. He stressed that curbing tobacco sales near schools was not the responsibility of the police alone, and urged educational institution managements and parents to act with social responsibility.

He suggested installing CCTV cameras around educational institutions and monitoring the surroundings from command control centres. He also advised parents to remain vigilant about their children’s behaviour, friends and movements after school hours.

Senior police officers M. Srinivasulu, Tafseer Iqbal, Joel Davis, Swetha and Vaibhav Gaikwad Raghunath participated in the operation.

Sajjanar said consumption of nicotine and tobacco products was often the first step towards drug addiction. The easy availability of tobacco near educational institutions placed students at risk of gradually becoming addicted, he warned, adding that police had initiated stringent measures to break the cycle at the primary stage.

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 prohibits the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions, while selling tobacco to minors is a punishable offence under the Juvenile Justice Act. Sajjanar said police had monitored the implementation of these laws strictly, conducting simultaneous raids on shops that violated regulations and registering cases.
