RAIPUR: A ruling BJP MLA in Chhattisgarh has been included in the list of beneficiaries of the government-sponsored mass wedding programme, scheduled to be held at Bemetara in the state on Sunday, triggering a political row with Opposition Congress questioning his eligibility for the scheme.
BJP MLA from Bemetara in east Chhattisgarh Dipesh Sahu and his bride are among the 24 couples who will tie the knot at the state government-sponsored mass wedding programme, christened as the ‘Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana’, in Bemetara on Sunday.
Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai has hailed the decision by Mr. Sahu to tie nuptial knots at the mass wedding programme along with poor couples, saying that he set a positive example for social equality.
“Mr. Sahu has set an inspiring example by deciding to marry at a mass wedding ceremony”, Mr. Sai said.
The chief minister is going to attend the programme to bless the new couples.
Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Deepak Baij however questioned Mr. Sahu’s eligibility to enjoy the benefits of the scheme.
“The BJP MLA is going to rob the benefits given under the scheme to a poor couple by deciding to marry at the mass wedding programme”, he said.
A girl hailing from a family falling under the category of Below Poverty Line (BPL) is eligible for the scheme.
The BJP MLA however clarified that his prospective bride hails from a BPL family and hence, she is eligible to avail the benefits of the scheme.
This apart, he has decided to award the money given to him and his prospective bride under the scheme to meritorious girl students, he said.
The BJP described the Congress’s decision to make it an issue as a ‘storm in a teacup’.
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav has recently conducted the marriage of his son at the mass wedding programme of the state government at Ujjain in MP.
