Nalgonda: Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday challenged the opposition BRS to show any welfare scheme discontinued by the Congress government in the last two and half years of its rule.

Allegations by the BRS in this respect are baseless, the minister said while distributing the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak cheques to 27 beneficiaries at Khammam.

He said that the previous BRS government had failed to issue new ration cards or sanction pucca houses, that adversely impacted the lives of the poor for a decade. “The people taught a lesson to the BRS by defeating it. In the recently conducted elections also, the people rejected the BRS and continued their support to the Congress,” he said.

Srinivas Reddy asserted that this was the “good performance certificate” that the people gave the Congress government vis-à-vis its efficient governance and able implementation of the welfare schemes. Even though the BRS had used the social media for its “false propaganda” against the Congress government, the people continued to stand firmly in support of the Congress in every election in the last two and half years, he said.

He said the “people-centric” Congress government is effectively implementing the welfare schemes with the aim of ensuring a problem-free life to the poor people. “We are taking every care to reach the benefits of the welfare schemes to the doorsteps of every eligible family in the state.”

The minister said that despite the financial constraints, the Congress government was also continuing all the welfare schemes initiated by the BRS government. “In addition to this, new benefits to the people are the free travel for women in TGRTC buses, new ration cards for all eligible families, 200 units of free electricity for every poor family, crop loan waiver for up to `2 lakh, ‘Rythu Bharosa’ and the `500 per quintal bonus for paddy of fine rice varieties in addition to Minimum Support Price to farmers, being offered by the Congress government,” he added.

Srinivas Reddy accused the BRS government of deceiving the poor by diluting the housing scheme in the name of double bedroom houses. He challenged the BRS leaders to state how many double bedroom houses were distributed to the poor during its 10-year rule.

“After coming to power, the Congress government has revived the Indiramma Houses scheme and sanctioned 4.5 lakh such houses in the first phase. The second phase of this scheme would be taken up by the government shortly,” he said.

Irrigation development corporation chairman Muvva Vijay Babu, Khammam Mayor Punukollu Neeraja, and officials of the civil supplies and revenue departments were present.
