Hyderabad: BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Saturday slammed the Centre for scuttling the democratic rights of the people to protest at Janatar Mantar demanding resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
“Every citizen in India has the right to protest democratically. On behalf of Telangana Congress party, we strongly condemn the actions such as stopping transport facilities in Delhi, metro trains, and internet without any opportunity to stage protest,” he said.
The Minister found fault with the Centre for deploying thousands of police, obstructing protesters, and making arrests. “The right to vote is the most crucial weapon of democracy. When people are worried about losing that right to vote, the Central government, which should solve their problems, should act responsibly. Appropriate action should be taken considering the allegations against the protection of voters’ rights,” he said.
In addition to the demand for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar from his post, the people were demanding that eligible common citizens should not lose their right to vote in the process of revising the voters’ list.
The Central government, which should discuss and find a solution to these demands, is disrupting metro trains, and other transport facilities and obstructing protesters, which is against the spirit of democracy.
It should give an answer to the opposition’s allegations of vote theft. Transparent measures should be taken to instill confidence in the electoral system in the people. Just as the people fought for the country’s independence, democratic movements are continuing today to protect the constitution, protect democratic values, and protect the right to vote, Prabhakar said.
“We demand the Central government immediately stop the restrictive measures being taken against the protesters in Delhi, provide them with an opportunity to protest democratically, and take appropriate steps so that no one loses their right to vote in the revision of the voter list,” he added.
