Vijayawada:Post-cyclone viral fever is suspected to have affected 71 girl students of Sivannapeta Gurukul School in Kurupam mandal of Parvathipuram Manyam district, according to a report submitted by public health director Venkataramana to health minister Satya Kumar Yadav.
The health department said the condition of all the affected students was stable and the situation was under control. Of the 71 girls who developed fever, 30 have recovered, 38 are receiving treatment and being monitored in a special room at the hostel, and three have been shifted to the Kurupam community health centre for further medical care.
The school has 559 girl students, of whom 516 attended classes. Rapid diagnostic tests detected Plasmodium falciparum malaria in one student, while the remaining 515 tested negative. Fever-related tests conducted on 44 affected students returned normal results. Blood samples have been sent for further investigation.
A special medical camp was conducted on November 6 with general medicine and paediatric specialists. Based on clinical examinations, doctors suspected post-cyclone viral fever. The camp will continue, with doctors monitoring the students.
Water samples collected from three sources at the hostel were sent for laboratory testing and returned normal results. Officials collected additional samples on November 6.
Of the two RO plants at the hostel, one is under repair. The students are being supplied with boiled and cooled drinking water. Officials also reported that the kitchen and hostel surroundings were clean.
No fever cases have been reported in Kurupam village, about a kilometre from the hostel. The condition of the three girls admitted to the community health centre is also stable.
Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav instructed officials to ensure continuous medical care for the affected students. Director of public health R Venkataramana said specialists were providing the required treatment and all students would remain under medical supervision.
