Anantapur: Heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms on Tuesday night, caused widespread damage and disrupted power supply for more than 15 hours in several parts of the Anantapur district headquarters. Electricity supply got disrupted after electricity poles collapsed or got uprooted and trees fell on 33 KV and 11 KV power lines. Scores of transformers suffered damage. District’s power department personnel could restore power supply only in phases after removing fallen trees and erecting damaged poles. Additional staff from other areas of the district had been deployed for restoration works in the Anantapur city and the surrounding rural areas.

Officials said 26 LT poles, 18 poles on 11 KV lines and three major 33 KV poles got uprooted in areas including Aravinda Nagar, Government Hospital, Housing Board Colony and SBI Colony.

Anantapur additional deputy engineer Chandrasekhar told Deccan Chronicle that restoration teams had started repair works on Tuesday night itself. But a second spell of rain disrupted operations and delayed completion of the work. Following this, power supply across the Anantapur headquarters could be fully restored around Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy rainfall has been recorded in parts of Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai districts. Atmakur received 7.8 cm rainfall, followed by B.K. Samudram with 6.5 cm and Anantapur urban with 5.2 cm. Anantapur municipal corporation authorities used JCBs to clear debris blocking major drains. Traffic on the NH-44 service road at Tapovanam, which remained blocked from Tuesday evening, got restored on Wednesday after removal of the debris using tractors.
