HYDERABAD: Environmental protection activities, plantation drives and wildlife awareness programmes began at Nehru zoological park (NZP), Hyderabad on Monday under the Telangana government’s 99-day Praja Palana-Pragathi Pranalika initiative.
The environment-focused schedule, running until June 12, forms the 10th theme of the state-wide programme aimed at grassroots development, public service delivery and welfare outreach.
Chief conservator of forests (wildlife) N. Kshitija and zoo curator J. Vasantha inaugurated the activities at the zoo’s Bioscope Hall. Zoo staff, officials and Zoo Corps members later participated in plantation and clean-up drives inside the premises. Officials said around 50 plant species were planted across the zoo campus, while staff also carried out a clean and green drive to clear plastic waste.
According to the zoo administration, the 12-day schedule includes Telangana Formation Day activities, environmental awareness programmes, educational events, nature activities, public health programmes, infrastructure-related initiatives, wildlife awareness events and World Environment Day observance.
Addressing participants, Kshitija said environmental protection and sustainability awareness formed a key part of the state government’s outreach programme. Forest, veterinary and administrative officials of the zoo also took part in the programme.
