Nellore: Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned a major ₹920-crore package to erstwhile Prakasam district under the Integrated Horticultural Development (IHD) Project (IHDP) for development of rural roads and irrigation facilities over the next three years.

Announcing the sanction of the package on Sunday, Social Welfare minister Dr. Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy said irrigation will help the district farmers develop horticulture projects, while the rural roads will enable farmers to move their horticulture produce quickly to the markets.

Dr. Swamy thanked Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan for extending such a substantial support to the Prakasam district.

The minister said the IHD project will cover both Prakasam and Markapuram districts.

Apart from strengthening rural road connectivity, the project will give priority to key irrigation works, including Veligonda Phase-II, Korisapadu Reservoir, and Paleru Reservoir projects, to promote horticultural development across the region.

The minister said the project would transform the rural landscape of the two districts by improving road connectivity and creating a strong foundation for horticulture-based growth. He expressed confidence that the programme would significantly increase cultivation of horticultural crops and help establish the district as a major horticulture hub.

Dr. Swamy pointed out that the project will help generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities for youth, while accelerating overall economic development in the region.

Reiterating his gratitude to the CM and Deputy CM, he underlined that the allocation reflects the state government’s commitment to develop the erstwhile Prakasam district and improve the economic status of its farming community.
