Sunderland‘s miserable run in the Premier League continued as they missed a chance to move off the bottom of the table, losing 3-1 at Coventry City.

Coventry started the day just a point above the Black Cats, but took command in the first half as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto pounced on poor defending from Trai Hume to fire home his first Premier League goal before Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead with a deflected effort after robbing Luke O’Nien of possession.

Another deflected shot left Sunderland with a mountain to climb as Jack Rudoni’s strike was diverted home by Omar Alderete. Enzo Le Fee pulled one back from the penalty spot, but it proved nothing more than a consolation for the visitors, who had Alderete sent off in stoppage time.

While Coventry move out of the relegation zone, Sunderland remain rooted to the foot of the table with just five points from nine games, Regis Le Bris’ men without a league win since beating Fulham 1-0 back in August.

The league’s two other promoted sides shared the spoils on Humberside as Hull City drew 2-2 with Ipswich Town.

Florentino Luis gave Ipswich a deserved first-half lead, but two goals in the space of 10 minutes from Tim Iroegbunam and Oli McBurnie seemingly put the Tigers on course for the points.

However, Julio Enciso salvaged a point for Ipswich, doing so in style as he curled a long-range effort beyond Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Coventry’s win saw Nottingham Forest drop to second bottom after they were beaten 2-0 by Brentford.

Nikola Milenkovic’s own goal on the half-hour mark and Igor Thiago’s second league goal of the season sent the Bees up to sixth and ensured a fifth game without a win for Forest.

Bournemouth are just behind in seventh, the Cherries moving into the top half with a 2-0 win over Leeds United.

Leeds looked to have taken the lead in the 11th minute through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, only for his goal to be ruled out after a VAR check as he was ruled to have handled before finding the net.

And Bournemouth made the most of that let-off, Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford guilty of a horrible error as his ill-judged pass to Ao Tanaka was intercepted by Justin Kluivert, who teed up Evanilson to tap in.

Amine Adli made the points safe in injury time, producing an excellent finish from Junior Kroupi’s superb pass.
